STARKVILLE, Miss. _ The No. 3 Mississippi State Bulldogs are perfect no more as the University of Central Arkansas Bears pulled off a 7-5 victory in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 7,169 at Dudy Noble Field.
The Bears (13-2), off to their best start since 1995, carried a 5-3 lead into the ninth inning but the Bulldogs (17-1) tied the game with a pair of runs. UCA came right back in the top of the 10th with a Blake Marchal lead off walk. He went to second on Forrestt Allday’s sacrifice bunt and scored when Ethan Harris reached on an error by MSU first baseman Nick Flair.
Jonathan Davis was hit by a pitch and catcher Michael Marietta singled to center field to score Harris with an unearned run and give the Bears a 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the 10th, reliever Zach Barr walked the leadoff batter before Ethan McKinzie came on and got a pop fly to center field for the first out. After Adam Frazier got a base hit, he was thrown out going to second.
With Frost at third base with two outs, McKinzie struck out C.T. Bradford to seal the biggest win in UCA’s short NCAA Division I history.
UCA, which lost 4-2 to MSU on Friday night, got two hits each from Harris, Marietta, Marchal and Scott Zimmerle. Barr, who relieved in the ninth, got the victory, with McKinzie picking up the save.
The Bulldogs, who were perfect on their home field this season and have yet to play an away game, used 10 pitchers and 28 players in all. Brandon Woodruff, who walked Marchal in the 10th, got the loss. Starter Evan Mitchell lasted just 2 2/3 innings. MSU pitchers walked 9 batters and hit 6.
UCA starter Jeffery Enloe went 5.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 4.
The Bears had beaten nationally ranked teams before since moving up to NCAA Division I in 2007, but never one as high as No. 3 in the country. UCA now has a chance to win the series with Game 3 set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
