CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears pounded 15 hits and took advantage of 15 walks Friday night in blasting Jackson State 19-4 on a cold night at Bear Stadium.
UCA (4-1), which has walked 56 times in five games this season, fell behind 2-0 in the third inning but then outscored the Tigers (2-3) 19-2 the rest of the way.
Senior right fielder Forrestt Allday continued his hot hitting, going 5 for 5 with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored and an RBI from his leadoff spot. Allday is hitting .591 for the season with six walks. Senior designated hitter Michael Marietta had 3 RBI and sophomore catcher Kraig Kelley had 4. Junior shortstop Justin Treece was 2 for 3 with three walks, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Senior righthander Caleb McClanahan (2-0) went seven innings for the second straight start, allowing 6 hits and striking out 7 with no walks.
The Bears took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, than blew it open with six more in the fourth. Another six-run inning in the seventh made it 16-4 and UCA got three more in the eighth. Jackson State committed four errors and managed eight hits. Shorstop Gary Thomas went 4 for 4 for the Tigers, whle left fielder Fred Hampton had a team-high 2 RBI.
Brandon Gregory (1-1) took the loss for JSU, lasting three innings and allowing six earned runs and walking five.
Center fielder Jonathan Davis also had two hits and scored four runs for the Bears, while pinch hitter Scott Zimmerle had a two-run single in the seventh inning. In all, 10 UCA players scored and seven had an RBI.
UCA takes on Kansas at 1 p.m. Saturday, then meets Jackson State again at 1 p.m. Sunday.
