CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears got victories from two freshmen pitchers on Wednesday in sweeping a doubleheader from Mississippi Valley State 5-0 and 5-3 at Bear Stadium.
Zach Barr, a lefthander from White Hall, tossed a 7-inning complete-game shutout, allowing 7 hits, striking out 6 and walking just 1 in Game 1. Righthander Connor McClain of Conway went six innings in the nightcap for his first victory as well, allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, striking out 4 and walking 3.
UCA led 1-0 after two innings in the opener on the strength of freshman Griffin Glaude’s RBI single in the second inning. After leaving runners on base in three consecutive innings, the Bears finally exploded for four runs in the sixth. Glaude led off with a double and went to third on Nick Rougeau’s sacrifice bunt.
Forrestt Allday dropped down a safety squeeze bunt to score Glaude and Ethan Harris reached on a throwing error by the MVSU pitcher, which allowed Allday and Marchal to both score for a 4-0 lead. Bryan Willson followed with an RBI single to right field for the 5-0 margin.
Barr, in just his eighth appearance and first career start, allowed a single in the seventh but then coaxed three consecutive ground outs to end the game. Senior third baseman Blake Roberts was 2 for 4, while Glaude was 2 for 3.
In the second game, the Bears fell behind 2-1 in the third inning but quickly tied it up in the bottom of the frame on Roberts’ sacrifice fly that scored Ethan Harris. Roberts had given the Bears their first run in the opening inning with an RBI single to left field.
Doug Votoloto added two more runs in the fifth inning with a two-run single to second base. Catcher Garrett Vail scored from third and Logan Moon never stopped running and scored from second for a 4-2 lead. Roberts finished off the Delta Devils with a solo home run to left field, his second in two days and his team-high sixth of the season, in the sixth inning.
Vail, a junior from Temple, Texas, went 3 for 4 with a double and Roberts was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI. Votolato, a sophomore from Flower Mound, Texas, finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBI. McClain won in just his seventh appearance and first start on the mound. Senior Andy Steinmetz pitched a perfect seventh for his second save.
UCA returns to Southland Conference play this weekend at Stephen F. Austin.
