HAMMOND, La. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears used a five-run sixth inning to down Southeastern Louisiana 8-4 on Friday night in Southland Conference play at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
UCA (12-15, 6-8) won a road conference game for the first time this season and broke a four-game overall losing streak. The victory also evened the series at one game apiece with the series finale set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Bears only managed 6 hits but drew 11 walks from four SLU pitchers. UCA batted around in both the fifth and sixth innings, scoring three runs in the fifth and then taking the lead for good with five more in the sixth.
UCA junior starter Caleb McClanahan (3-2 ) pitched into the eighth inning, striking out four and allowing only four hits. Junior Clint Green finished it off, allowing no hits and no runs in two innings.
The Bears fell behind 2-0 in the third but rallied with three runs in the fifth with only two hits. Ethan Harris drew a bases-loaded walk off reliever Joseph Koon to score Blake Roberts. Forrestt Allday then hit a two-run single to center field to give the Bears a 3-2 lead.
The Lions (22-10, 8-6) came back to re-take the lead in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs but UCA answered in the sixth, sending 10 batters to the plate and walking four times. Harris had a two-run double down the left-field line for the big blow.
McClanahan walked the first batter in the eighth, giving way to Green, who continued his solid pitching of late with two strong innings. He set down the Lions in order in the ninth, including getting the league’s leading hitter, Brock Hebert, to ground out to shortstop. Hebert went 0 for 4 on the day.
Roberts finished 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored for the Bears, while Harris had 3 RBI and Allday added 2 more. Allday also drew two walks to push his league-leading total to 38.
Senior righthander Ryan Angus will start for the Bears in the series finale.
