CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears hit a pair of home runs and took advantage of 14 walks to roll to a 16-6 victory over the Murray State Thoroughbreds on Sunday at Bear Stadium.
Senior third baseman Blake Roberts had a first-inning grand slam and finished 3 for 5 with 4 RBI on the day. Freshman second baseman Griffin Glaude hit his first home run, a solo shot in the third, and went 3 for 5 as well.
The Bears (4-6) took advantage of the wild arm of Murray State starter Tim Vonder Haar in the first inning and scored seven runs on just three hits. Vonder Haar got the first out but then walked four and hit a batter over the next five.
UCA scored two before Vonder Haar exited. Michael Marietta then greeted reliever Mark Roberts with an RBI single before Roberts made it 7-0 with a grand slam over the left field fence, his second home run of the series.
Murray State got two runs back in the second inning on a two-run single by left fielder Ty Stetson but Glaude, from Beebe, led off the third with a solo shot to right field for an 8-3 lead. UCA got four more in the fifth inning on five hits, including a two-run single by Ethan Harris.
After the Thoroughbreds put up a run in the top of the sixth, UCA got two more in the bottom of the frame as Jonathan Davis and Harris both drew bases-loaded walks. The Bears got their final two runs in the eighth on Michael Marietta’s two-run single to center field.
Davis and Blake Marchal walked three times each as MSU used eight different pitchers, with all but two giving up at least one run and all but one walking a batter.
Davis and Marietta had 3 RBI each and Roberts and Glaude scored three times each. Starter Ryan Angus picked up the victory, going six innings and allowing 9 hits, 4 earned runs and striking out 4.
UCA plays at Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday and returns home for the opening of Southland Conference play on Friday against Lamar.
