CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears made it two straight Sunday afternoon with a 5-3 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in Southland Conference play at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (10-10, 5-4) scored three runs off A&M-CC ace Daniel Minor over the first five innings and handed one of the Southland Conference’s top pitchers a no decision. UCA got single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to take the series 2-1.
Senior right hander Ryan Angus was solid for the Bears, going six innings and allowing just 4 hits, 3 runs and striking out 4. Sophomore Bryce Biggerstaff (1-1) came out of the UCA bullpen, only the third relief pitcher the Bears used on the weekend, and got the victory. Biggerstaff allowed just 1 hit and struck out 2 in three innings of work.
Senior designated hitter Blake Roberts put the first run on the board with a triple to center that scored Griffin Glaude in the second inning. In the fourth inning, senior Bryan Willson singled to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on Travis Snider’s single.
Willson then scored on Glaude’s fielder’s choice to make it 2-0.
After the Islanders (11-14, 4-5) tied the score in the top of the fifth, the Bears went back ahead in the bottom of the inning on Willson’s RBI single to left that scored Ethan Harris.
A&M-CC tied it again in the seventh with a single run but UCA answered again in the bottom of the frame. Harris had an RBI single to plate Blake Marchal and Forrestt Allday’s squeeze bunt scored Jonathan Davis for a 5-3 lead.
Biggerstaff got the Islanders in order in both the eighth and ninth innings for the win.
Davis, Harris, Willson and Snider had two hits each for the Bears, who finished with 11. The Islanders had just five hits, with no player having more than one.
UCA travels to Missouri for a two-game series at 6 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday.
