NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana. – Less than 24 hours after Central Arkansas earned its first Southland Conference victory of the 2011 season, the Sugar Bears fell in straight sets to in-state foe Arkansas State 25-20, 25-19 and 25-22.
Arkansas State (8-5), who had tuned up earlier in the day defeating Alcorn State 25-4, 25-5, 25-4, hit a solid .294 and held UCA to a hitting percentage of just .105 in the victory.
The Red Wolves were led to victory by Taylor Szypulski with 12 kills and six digs. Megan Baska recorded a match-high 25 digs, Allison Kearney added 22 assists and Cayla Fielder and Jasmine Terry added nine kills apiece.
UCA (4-7) struggled to find an offensive rhythm as the best single game hitting percentage they recorded on the afternoon was a mark of .194 in the third and final set.
Taylor Whileyman and Lindsey Barron led the charge with eight kills apiece. Marissa Collins led all players with 24 assists to go along with five digs. Defensively, Cristin Curl notched 12 digs.
The Sugar Bears will look to earn their second win of the Holiday Inn Express Tournament tomorrow morning as they take on Alcorn State at 10 a.m.
