CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears stranded 14 baserunners on Saturday in an 8-4 loss to the UT Arlington Mavericks in Southland Conference play at Bear Stadium.
The Mavericks (23-18, 12-9) put up 14 hits against five UCA pitchers and used a five-run second inning to take control of the game early. After allowing seven runs in the first three innings, the Bears (19-21, 9-12) allowed just one run the rest of the way.
But the UCA offense could not get the key hits it needed and managed only single runs in the first, second, fifth and seventh innings. UCA left the bases loaded in the second and sixth innings and left two runners on in two other innings. The Bears had nine hits, with junior third baseman Blake Roberts going 3 for 5 and scored two runs.
Jonathan Houston had an RBI triple to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jonathan Davis drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning, and Greg Noble had an RBI single in the fifth. In the bottom of the seventh, Zack Dickson’s fielder’s choice scored Roberts for the Bears’ final run.
For the Mavericks, five players had two hits, with Preston Beck going 2 for 5 with 3 RBI. Jordan Vaughn and Philip Incaviglia had two RBI each.
UCA starter Bryan Willson (2-2) took the loss, going two innings and allowing 7 hits and 5 earned runs. UTA starter Collin Reynolds (3-5) got the win, allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs in 5.2 innings. John Beck pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed no hits for his first save.
