LAKE CHARLES, La. _ Righthander Ryan Angus threw a complete game seven-hitter and the University of Central Arkansas Bears scored all their runs in the eighth inning in a 4-2 victory over the McNeese State Cowboys on Saturday at Cowboy Diamond.
Angus, a junior from Carrollton, Texas, won for second time this season, both complete games. He allowed two earned runs, striking out five and walking three while throwing 122 pitches. His previous victory was a 144-pitch complete game win over Eastern Illinois on Feb. 27.
McNeese starter Matt Click (2-3) held the Bears in check for seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. But the Bears sent nine batters to the plate and turned four hits into four runs.
Jake Fuller started the rally with a double down the left-field line and Greg Noble knocked him in with a base hit to left field. Zack Dickson’s sacrifice bunt moved Noble to second and a ground out sent him to third. Ethan Harris drew a walk before freshman Jonathan Davis doubled down the left-field line for an RBI. Harris made it 3-2, scoring on a wild pitch, before Jonathan Houston double to score Davis.
The Cowboys (14-14, 5-6) got a leadoff single in the eighth off Angus but he got the next three outs in order. The Bears threatened in the night, putting two runners on base, but stranded both. Angus then sandwiched a walk around the final three outs in the ninth for the victory.
McNeese took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Seth Granger’s RBI single, and added another in the sixth on an error on Angus on Renny ‘s bunt. After that, Angus (2-2) allowed only two hits the rest of the way.
Davis led the Bears at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, while Fuller went 2 for 3 and Noble 2 for 4. Granger and Jace Peterson had two hits each for McNeese.
Game 3 of the series will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.
