SYCAMORES TAKE SERIES OPENER 10-5

Junior Jordan Getchell hit a home run on Friday
CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas baseball team opened their four-game series with Indiana State with a 10-5 defeat at Bear Stadium on Friday afternoon. The host Bears (6-3) were outhit by the Sycamores (3-4) 12-8 in the contest.

ISU got on the board in the top of the second when designated hitter Lucas Hileman singled and scored on a double from third baseman Koby Kraemer. Kraemer stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Jon Hedges to go up 2-0. The Sycamores added another run in the top of third after a UCA error.

The Bears answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Junior center fielder Jordan Getchell led the frame off with a solo homer over the left field fence. With two outs, senior first baseman Jonathan Houston doubled and crossed the plate on a base hit by third baseman Bryan Willson.

Hedges answered with a two-run blast in the fourth to put the Sycamores up 5-2. Right fielder Robby Ort drove in Levi Ferguson with a single in the fifth to make the game 6-2. ISU tacked on three more runs on five base hits in the seventh.

Houston led the bottom of the eighth off with a base hit for the Bears. After Willson drew a walk, sophomore Ethan Harris drove in Houston with a base hit through the left side of the infield. A pair of ISU errors led to two more runs for UCA, including a run-scoring single by freshman second baseman Jonathan Davis.

Ort led off the ninth with a walk and stolen base and later scored on a wild pitch from UCA freshman reliever Jackson Lowery.

Houston recorded two hits and two runs scored with a double and a stolen base. Harris also added two hits with an RBI. ISU's Tyler Wampler went 3-for-4, while Ort, Hileman and Kraemer had two hits each.

Colin Rea (2-1) picked up the win for the Sycamores by striking out seven and giving up four hits, two runs and three walks over six innings. Reggie Hochstedler allowed four hits, two earned runs and two walks with five strikeouts for a three-inning save. UCA senior starter Evan Cox (1-1) struck out four and allowed 10 hits and eight runs over 6.1. Lowery struck out four but gave up two hits, one run and five walks.

The Bears and Sycamores will play a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The series finale will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
