BEARS FALL TO TROJANS 8-3

Freshman Jonathan Davis extended his hitting streak to nine games
CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears left 13 runners on base and committed three errors in an 8-3 loss to the UALR Trojans on Wednesdaynight at Bear Stadium.

The Trojans (11-13) never trailed, although the Bears pulled to within 3-2 after three innings. But UALR scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, then broke it open with three more in the seventh to break UCA’s two-game winning streak.

UALR took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on first baseman Jake Rowell’s solo home run to right field. The Trojans added two more in the third with an RBI groundout by Jason Houston and an RBI single to center field by Nick Rountree.

UCA got two runs back in the bottom of the third when senior Zack Dickson singled and stole second base. Jonathan Davis’ base hit to left field scored Dickson and extended his hitting streak to a team-high nine games. Davis then stole second and came in on Jonathan Houston’s single up the middle to make it 3-2.

After the Trojans added one run in the fourth, UCA left the bases loaded in the fifth inning and again in the eighth. UALR added three runs on four hits in the seventh to take a 8-2 lead. UCA got its final run in the ninth when catcher Travis Snider singled up the middle to score Greg Noble, who had led off the inning with a walk.

UCA starter Bryan Willson (1-1) lasted six innings, allowing six hits and 4 earned runs. UALR starter Dillon Wilson left after 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, striking out five and walking four. Reliever John Maler (2-2) got the victory with 3.2 innings of relief, with four strikeouts and four walks.

Davis, a freshman from Camden Fairview, led the Bears at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Center fielder Cameron Bentley went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI for the Trojans.

UCA returns to Southland Conference action this weekend at McNeese State.
