CONWAY, Ark. _ The Lamar Cardinals scored nine runs in the first three innings Sunday and coasted to a 15-5 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in Southland Conference action at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (9-11, 1-5) had the game tied at 1-1 after the first inning but then surrendered three runs in the second and five more in the fifth. The Cardinals (16-7, 5-1) put up four more runs in the sixth inning before UCA picked up three in the seventh.
UCA used five pitchers, with the first three struggling. Starter Blake Payne, who won Saturday’s game in relief, lasted just 1.1 innings Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits. Clint Green, the third hurler, allowed four runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.
Bryan Willson, the Bears’ starting third baseman, came on in the middle of the third and went 4.2 innings. He allowed nine hits and five runs.
Lamar’s leadoff batter Kevin Roebuck went 4 for 5 with 7 RBI and 5 runs scored. Right fielder Jeff Apt and first baseman Wade Mathis had three hits apiece as the Cardinals finished with 19 hits, seven for extra base hits. Roebuck had three 3-run doubles.
UCA totaled seven hits, including a two-run home run off the scoreboard by freshman Jonathan Davis in the seventh inning. Davis, who played left field, second base and center in the game, finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and two stolen bases.
Payne (2-3) took the loss while Tommy Roebuck (2-1) got the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Bears play at Missouri on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home for an SLC series with Southeastern Louisiana on the weekend.
