BEARS FALL IN 10 INNINGS

Ethan Harris had an RBI single in the ninth to tie the game at 3-3
NACOGDOCHES, Texas _ The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks took advantage of six University of Central Arkansas errors on Sunday and beat the Bears 4-3 in 10 innings at Jaycees Field.

The Bears (8-8, 0-3) committed one of the errors in the bottom of the 10th, allowing the Lumberjacks (11-5, 3-0) to load the bases. A wild pitch by UCA reliever Blake Payne brought in the winning run.

UCA had tied the game a 3-3 with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Ethan Harris had an RBI single that scored Doug Votolato, who had drawn a leadoff walk. UCA reliever Blake Payne worked a scoreless ninth, despite two more UCA errors.

The Bears got one baserunner in the top of the 10th before SFA reliever Landon Kozeny struck out Votolato to end the threat. In the bottom of the inning, right fielder Jackson Hood led off with a base hit to left field. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second before Bryce Cummings was intentionally walked.

Michael Haynes reached on a fielding error by Votolato at third to load the bases. With leadoff hitter Bryson Myles at the plate, a wild pitch on the first pitch allowed the winning run to score.

The Bears scored first in the third inning when Votolato had an infield single and later scored on Michael Pair’s two-out hit to right. SFA got two runs in the bottom of the third and added another in the fifth for a 3-1 lead.

UCA picked up another run in the eighth when pinch hitter Jake Fuller’s fielder’s choice scored Pair.

The Bears had only six hits, with first baseman Jonathan Houston going 2 for 5. Myles was 3 for 5 for the Lumberjacks. Kozeny got his first victory and Payne dropped to 1-2 for the Bears.

UCA travels to Stillwater, Okla., on Tuesday to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys at 4 p.m. before returning home for a Southland Conference series with Lamar on the weekend.
