'JACKS MAKE IT TWO STRAIGHT OVER BEARS

Kyle Prevett had a pair of hits on Saturday
NACOGDOCHES, Texas _ The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks used a three-run seventh inning to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Jaycees Field.

The ‘Jacks (10-5, 2-0) won despite four errors and only nine hits. UCA, which got a pair of hits each from catcher Travis Snider and shortstop Kyle Prevett, rallied with two runs in the eighth inning but it was not enough.

SFA took a 1-0 lead in the third when UCA starter Ryan Angus walked the leadoff batter and he was bunted to second. A ground out moved both runners before Darren Crabtree knocked in the run with a base hit to right field.

Angus held the Lumberjacks until the seventh inning when they added three runs off two hits and an error to take a 4-0 lead. Riley Huble had a two-run double in the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Bryan Willson drew a one-out walk and Snider singled to right center. Both runners advanced on a failed pickoff attempt and Jake Fuller’s sacrifice fly scored Willson. Greg Noble followed with an RBI single to left center to make it 4-2.

The Bears loaded the bases in the ninth inning against SFA closer Jason West, who hit two batters in the frame. However, West struck out the final two batters he faced for his first save.

Angus (1-2) took the loss, striking out five and walking four in 6.2 innings. Prevett and Snider were both 2 for 4 at the plate.

The teams finish the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
