ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Central Arkansas volleyball team racked up a season-high 86 digs and 10 blocks en route to a four-set victory at UT Arlington in Southland Conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Sugar Bears (17-6, 7-0 SLC) downed the Mavericks (9-11, 3-3 SLC) 23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 at Texas Hall, extending UCA's Southland Conference winning streak to 29 matches, tying Hawaii for the longest league winning streak in the nation.
"This is a very good win for our team," said Sugar Bears head coach Steven McRoberts. "We had never won here so I'm glad our seniors could mark that off their list."
Five different players recorded double-digit digs for UCA. Leading the way with 30 was junior libero Cristin Curl, who passed the 1,000 career dig mark on Thursday night.
"Cristin played amazing today and we won a lot of long rallies," McRoberts said. "Our defense is what won it for us today."
As a team, the Sugar Bears outhit the Mavericks .151 to .090 and had a 51-43 kills advantage.
Senior Chloe Smith was a triple-threat for UCA, coming up with 13 kills, 12 digs and seven total blocks. Freshman middle blocker Jessica Nagy also had 13 kills to go with six blocks. Freshman setter Marissa Collins recorded 45 assists and 11 digs and senior Chloe Evans had 10 digs. Junior Jessica Hays posted nine kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Taylor Hammonds and freshman Karlie Giesler added eight kills each.
UTA was led by Amanda Aguilera with 14 kills to go with 16 digs. Alicia Shaffer had 22 digs and Raegan Daniel had six kills, 30 assists, 13 digs and six blocks.
UCA will take on Lamar in Beaumont, Texas on Thursday night.
