NATCHITOCHES, La. - University of Central Arkansas junior Cristin Curl passed the 1,000-dig milestone on Thursday night as the Sugar Bears swept Nothwestern State at Prather Coliseum. Curl, a libero from from Amarillo, Texas, came up with 14 digs against the Lady Demons, giving her 1,011 for her career. She is the 16th player in program history to reach that mark.
The Sugar Bears (16-6, 6-0 Southland), who just completed a perfect nine-match homestand, returned to the road by taking down the Lady Demons (10-8, 2-4) 25-17, 25-15, 25-16. UCA also extended their Southland Conference winning streak to 28 matches, the second longest in the nation.
UCA will try to continue their streak on Saturday at UT Arlington.
"This was a good win for our first road trip in 26 days," said UCA head coach Steven McRoberts. "We were smart attacking tonight and we did a great job with our serving and passing. Saturday will be an extremely tough match at UTA".
For the match, the Sugar Bears hit .370, their best performance in a league contest this season. They also connected on 50 kills, while NSU had 26 kills and hit .099.
Sugar Bear freshman setter Marissa Collins and junior outside hitter Jessica Hays each recorded double-doubles. Collins had 44 assists and 10 digs, while Hays had 11 kills and 13 digs to go with three aces.
Senior Chloe Smith led all players with 13 kills and freshman outside hitter Karlie Giesler added 10. Freshman Jessica Nagy threw down nine kills and hit .643.
The Lady Demons were led by Laranda Spann, who had nine kills and hit .421. Freshman libero Sarah Gillis had 14 digs.
