CONWAY, Ark. — The Central Arkansas volleyball team (1-11, 1-1) defeated Austin Peay (9-6, 1-1) 3-2 (17-25, 27-25, 23-25, 27-25, 15-9) to earn their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon.
Ella Chaney recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Kennady Martindale led the Sugar Bears with a career high 16 kills in the match, including two kills and a block in the fifth set.
The Sugar Bears were within 16-15 in the first set before Austin Peay scored eight straight points, going to set point leading 24-15. Fiona VanDyke stopped the stretch with a kill and
Sophie Skinner followed with a service ace, but Austin Peay closed out the set, 25-17.
Central Arkansas erased a 22-19 deficit late in the second set, using kills from
Annie Hopkins,
Ella Chaney,
Greyson Button and Martindale force set point with the 24-23 lead. Austin Peay answered with two straight points, taking a 25-24 lead, but Button and
Tatelyn Brandsma combined on a block to tie it before Martindale and
McKinzee Haas closed the 27-25 set win with consecutive kills.
Central Arkansas fought back from a 22-18 deficit to tie the third set at 22-22, with Haas serving an ace and setting a Chaney kill during the four-point push. After the Govs went back in front, Central Arkansas got level again at 23-23 on an Austin Peay attack error, but the Govs scored the final two points to take the set 25-23.
The Sugar Bears erased a 24-22 deficit and took the fourth set 27-25, scoring five of the final six points.
Nicole Sargent and
Karlyn Frazier combined on a block to tie it at 24-24, and Frazier followed with a kill. After Austin Peay tied it, Martindale delivered kills on Central Arkansas's final two points.
After forcing the fifth set, the Sugar Bears broke a 4-4 tie with a 5-0 run, including four straight points on Skinner's serve. After Austin Peay got within 8-6, Central Arkansas took control, scoring five of the last seven points to win the set 15-9, and the match 3-1.
