Sugar Bears Fall to Red Raiders

CORALVILLE, Iowa — The Central Arkansas volleyball team lost to Texas Tech 3-1 on Friday afternoon by set scores of 15-25, 27-25, 26-28, 22-25 at Xtream Arena. Ella Chaney and Sophie Skinner recorded double-doubles for the Sugar Bears. Chaney tallied a career high 14 kills and 12 digs. Skinner finished the match with a career high 46 assists and 11 digs. 
 
A Karlyn Frazier kill from Skinner put Central Arkansas in front first, but Texas Tech moved ahead early and controlled the first set. Fiona VanDyke led the Sugar Bears offense in the first set with five kills, including one that cut the Red Raider lead to five at 18-13. Texas Tech answered with the next three points and closed out the set 25-15.
 
In the second set, Central Arkansas erased a late 24-22 Texas Tech lead, winning four of the final five points to take the set 27-25. Chaney's kill made it 23-24, Frazier and Annie Hopkins combined on the block that tied it at 24, and Kennady Martindale added two late kills before Olivia Kremer's service ace secured the set win for the Sugar Bears.
 
Central Arkansas used a 5-0 scoring run, that included two service aces by Chaney to dig out of an early hole and tie the set at eight. The Sugar Bears then came back from being down 22-24 again with Frazier putting down a kill and Cameron McDaniel following with back-to-back service aces to move Central Arkansas in front 25-24. After forcing extra points, Texas Tech was able to win three straight points to win the set 28-26. 
 
In the fourth set, Central Arkansas worked back from an early 10-3 deficit, cutting Texas Tech's lead to 12-10 with kills from Greyson Button, Martindale, Hopkins and Chaney plus a block from Skinner and Frazier. The Sugar Bears made another late push, bringing the score within one at 21-22 on a Martindale kill and back-to-back Chaney kills, but Texas Tech scored three of the final four points to take the set 25-22, and the match 3-1.
