Sugar Bears Host Lipscomb in Saturday Showdown

CONWAY, Ark. – Back at home after a quick pitstop in Charlotte, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team returns to the Farris Center to play Lipscomb on Saturday. Playing the Bisons for the first and only time this season, tip-off at the Farris Center is set for 1 p.m.

The Sugar Bears (12-10, 5-5 ASUN) got an important win on Wednesday, dominating Queens to the tune of 64-39 in Charlotte. In addition to a stifling defensive effort, junior guard Cheyanne Kemp went on a tear, scoring a career-high 26 points and adding ten rebounds for her first double-double as a Sugar Bear. The Royals only had one player score more than six points, and Central Arkansas forced 19 turnovers, leading to 12 points. The first quarter was particularly great for the Sugar Bears, allowing just 1-of-11 from the floor and giving up just six points.

Kemp's growth as a player has been key for the Sugar Bears this season; Central Arkansas is 6-3 when the junior scores 15 or more points, and 9-1 when she has multiple assists. This year, she's put together 12.9 points per game, along with 4.5 rebounds per game, 41 assists, 18 steals and eight blocks.

The Sugar Bears get set to face Lipscomb, a team Central Arkansas saw three times last year. The first game in Conway was a double-digit win for the Sugar Bears, but both the road game and the postseason games were decided by five points or less. In Nashville, Bree Stephens hit a game-winner with five seconds left to lift Central Arkansas up by two, then in postseason, a solid defensive effort in the first quarter got the game going in the right direction, and the Sugar Bears were able to hold on.

Lipscomb (8-14, 5-6 ASUN) gave Eastern Kentucky a run for its money on Wednesday, narrowly falling 61-55 to the ASUN-leading Colonels. The Bisons committed 22 turnovers, which led to 23 points for Eastern Kentucky, and that negated a decent defensive showing by Lipscomb, holding EKU to just 61 points.

The Bisons have two double-digit scorers this season in Molly Heard (13.9 ppg) and McKayla Miller (12.3 ppg). The duo also headlines one of the ASUN's better three-point shooting teams, combining for 69 three-pointers. Six players have hit double-digit three-pointers, and three of them shoot 34 percent or higher.

Tip-off against the Bisons is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online. Fans can also keep up with all the action at The Bear 91.3, with Steve Owens on the call.
