CONWAY, Ark. — Central Arkansas (20-11, 15-3 ASUN) secured an 84-79 victory over Queens University of Charlotte (18-13, 13-5 ASUN) on Saturday at the Farris Center. The Bears capitalized on their free-throw shooting, converting 23 of 26 attempts to maintain their lead in a closely contested match-up. Going into the game, the Bears needed a win and an Austin Peay loss to become ASUN conference regular season champions and earn the #1 seed in the ASUN Championship tournament and that's exactly what happened. This is the Bears first conference title as an NCAA D1 member.
Today was also senior day and
Camren Hunter is the lone senior on the team. He had a huge day scoring 30 points leading the team to the historic win.
The game began with Central Arkansas establishing an early lead, highlighted by
Ty Robinson's fast-break layup at 19:09.
Camren Hunter hit a three-pointer at 17:27, facilitated by
Luke Moore's assist, and followed up with another three-pointer at 16:07, stretching the lead to 12-2. The Royals narrowed the gap midway through the half with Jordan Watford's layup and a three-pointer by Nasir Mann, reducing the deficit to 18-15 at the 6:32 mark. The Bears maintained their advantage, closing the half with a 31-24 lead after a late layup by
Javion Guy-King with just three seconds remaining.
The Bears capitalized on early momentum in the second half, extending their lead to 13 points with a 3-pointer by Guy-King at the 19:46 mark. The Royals attempted to rally with a 3-pointer from Yoav Berman, narrowing the margin to 10 points. Hunter's defensive rebound at 12:06 and subsequent layup helped the Bears maintain their lead. Despite a late surge by the Royals, including a 3-pointer by Chris Ashby with five seconds left, the Bears secured the win with final free throws by
Truman Byrne, closing the game 84-79.
