Bears Conquer Knights in ASUN Match

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After struggling to score in ASUN play, the Central Arkansas women's soccer team roared back with an impressive 3-1 win at Bellarmine Sunday afternoon.

The Bears (4-6, 1-2 ASUN) got back on track in a big way, taking down a Bellarmine squad that had only lost once in its first 11 matches this season. Sunday also marked the first road win for the Bears this season, and kept Central Arkansas undefeated all-time against Bellarmine.

Bellarmine's Lucy von Steffeneli came out guns blazing, taking five shots in the first 15 minutes, but found nothing. Central Arkansas responded with a pair of shots around the 20-minute mark, with Caroline Billings' shot going off the frame and Brityn Pavatt's shot on the corner kick going off target.

Central Arkansas continued to put pressure on the Bellarmine goal until finally, in the 34th minute, Sophia Backstrom found Billings, who punched it home for the first score of the afternoon. It marked Billings' fourth goal of the season, and Backstrom's first assist. It took the Bears just a few minutes to add to the lead, with Backstrom again finding a scorer, this time in Lea Duus Madsen. The Danish midfielder scored her second goal of the season to give Central Arkansas a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Just like the first half, Bellarmine came out looking for offense in the second, getting up several shots and a corner kick early on, and continued to pressure Central Arkansas' defense for the opening third of the second half. But the Bears held, bending without breaking until finally succumbing to a score in the 70th minute. And as the home team continued to try to equalize, Hanna Hargrave made stop after stop, making four saves in the second half to hold onto the one-score lead.

Hargrave's last stop came at the end of the 89th minute, and after holding it for a few seconds, launched it down past midfield. On the ensuing bounce, Trace Pavatt was able to collect it and race past a defender, and then slid past the keeper for an empty-net goal, her fifth of the year.

Central Arkansas is back at home for the next pair of games, starting with Lipscomb on Thursday, kicking off at 7 p.m. at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
