CONWAY, Ark. – Starting a two-game homestand, the Central Arkansas women's soccer team couldn't hold onto a tied ballgame against Lipscomb, dropping a 2-1 final Thursday night.
Megan Moudy tied the game in the second half, but a late score by the Bisons dropped the Bears to 4-7 on the year, with a 1-3 showing in ASUN games. The goal was Moudy's first of the season, and came via a PK in the second half.
Lipscomb came out quickly, relentlessly driving the ball up the field for some early shots. The pressure on the Central Arkansas defense eventually broke through, resulting in a ninth-minute score.
Caroline Billings nearly equalized a few minutes later, but her shot cleared the crossbar.
After the initial push, both offenses settled in and the ball started flowing more freely for both sides. After an offside call on Lipscomb, the Bears countered and moved into a dangerous spot.
Brianna Lopez ripped a ball with a ton of topspin from just outside the box, looping it towards the goal and forcing a save. And although the Bears couldn't capitalize on the ensuing corner kick, Central Arkansas was moving the ball and getting some quality looks.
Just like the end of the first half, the ball flowed from end to end, and both teams got into good spots early in the second half. Central Arkansas finally got some momentum to swing its way in the 62
nd, earning a PK after a handball in the box. Moudy, taking her first PK for the Bears, stepped up and calmly sank it, leveling the score.
As play continued in the second half, offenses began to slow down as both defenses settled in. But the complexion of the game flipped on its head in the 79
th, when Lipscomb was able to connect a pass and drill a shot into the back of the net, reclaiming the lead. Central Arkansas threw fresh legs into the match and tried to press forward, desperate for a second equalizer.
Trace Pavatt had the best look of the final 11 minutes, punching a ball from the top of the box that sailed just high of the frame, and Lipscomb was able to run out the clock from there.
The Bears flip the script fast, playing again on Sunday against Austin Peay. Kickoff against the Governors is set for 1 p.m. at the Bill Stephens Complex.
