Women's Soccer Finishes Hawaii Trip with Win over Sac State

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 win over Sacramento State, claiming a win before returning from its trip to Hawaii.

The Bears (2-2) survived after scoring in the second half, holding off a furious late-game attack from the Hornets. Trace Pavatt logged the game-winning score for Central Arkansas, and goalkeeper Hanna Hargrave made eight saves in net, keeping a feisty Sac State offense without a goal.

Sacramento State had most of the momentum in the first half, save an eighth minute shot on goal from Megan Moudy. And although the Hornets let loose on seven shots in the first 45, most were off target, forcing Hargrave to make just two saves to keep the score knotted at zeros. Additionally, Sacramento State had five corner kicks, compared to just one for the Bears, adding to the threats in the first half.

It didn't take long after halftime for the Bears to change the tide of the game; in the 52nd minute, Central Arkansas pieced together a really nice possession, building from a goal kick into attacking position, where Sakiko Manabe was able to find Pavatt for the score. It marked the second goal of the year for the junior, who now stands tied for team lead.

Sacramento State nearly equalized just a few minutes later with a pair of shots on goal, but Hargrave stood up to the task, saving both shots to keep her team in the lead. Hargrave would make six saves in the second half to stay on top, as the Hornets threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Bears to try and tie the game. But as time continued to pass, the Central Arkansas defense locked in and locked down, rejecting a pair of 89th minute shots to ice the win.

The Bears are back at home for the next one, playing Arkansas State on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
