CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team opens its 2025 season tomorrow on the West Coast, facing off with the Portland Pilots at 9 p.m. The Bears open with their first of six-straight on the road to start the year.
The Bears return four goal scorers from a season ago, including three that made the Preseason All-ASUN Team,
Devonte Richards,
Pietro Fontana and
Elijah Bishop. The three combined for 16 goals, with Richards and Fontana combining for 15 goals and seven assists. Fontana was recently named to Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Players this year, as well as the Hermann Award Watch List, which honors the top player in the nation.
Central Arkansas is on the road to start the season for just the second time in the last five years. The Bears also played Portland to start the year in 2022, tying the Pilots 2-2. Last year, the Bears went 8-7-3, reaching the ASUN Championship Final for the third time since joining the league.
Portland went 7-4-7 last year, including an unbeaten 4-0-4 in WCC play. The Pilots ended the year unbeaten in their final ten matches, which culminated in a 3-2 win over Oregon State to close the season.
This season, the Pilots play their first three at home, hosting the Bears before welcoming Lewis & Clark and Siena College to Merlo Field. Portland received two nods on the Preseason West Coast Conference Team, with Joe Highfield and Efetobo Aror each earning a selection.
The Bears and Pilots square off at 9 p.m. on Friday. The match will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
