CONWAY, Ark. – After high-scoring game one that saw the Bears put down 20 hits, the Central Arkansas softball team couldn't replicate that on Saturday, as the ASUN series against Austin Peay was evened up by the Govs.
The Bears (16-19, 4-3 ASUN) gave up one big inning to the Governors, but that was all it took on Saturday.
Austin Peay grabbed one run in the top of the first inning, which was answered in the home half of the frame.
Kylie Griffin opened the Bears offense with a walk, and
Madi Young drove her home with a double to right field, tying the game. Young reached third base, but was stranded 60 feet from home.
The teams traded baserunners in the second and third inning, but neither side was able to plate any more, and despite loading the bases in the third, Central Arkansas remained tied with Austin Peay 1-1 headed to the fourth. The Governors scored eight runs in the fourth, as the Bears were just unable to get out of the inning.
Lucy Crowder came in and was able to end the fourth with a strikeout, but Central Arkansas trailed big as the Bears headed back to the plate.
Central Arkansas put runners on in both the fourth and fifth innings, but couldn't score runs to start cutting into the lead.
The Bears and Governors will close the series on Sunday, throwing first pitch at 1 p.m.
