Softball Takes Rubber Match Against Govs

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas softball team finished off its ASUN series against Austin Peay with a dominant 12-3 win on Sunday. After splitting the first two games, the Bears took control early in the first, and never looked back in game three.

The win gives Central Arkansas its 17th win on the year, and marks a second ASUN series win for the Bears. The teams combined for 56 runs across three games, including two games of double-digit wins for Central Arkansas.

The lineup got to work immediately, after pulling off a double play in the first to retire the Governors. Kylie Griffin led off with a single to establish a runner on the first pitch. Then, with one out, four-consecutive singles scored three runs, as the middle of the order continued to punch hits. LJ Smith hit a sacrifice fly, driving in a fourth run in just the first inning.

Griffin got on in the second with a double, and a two-out single by Addie Graham scored Griffin to make it a 5-0 lead and force a pitching change. The Govs answered in the fourth inning, plating three runs to cut the lead to two.

Central Arkansas effectively ended the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven in the frame. Aeryn Shuman led off with a double, and moved to third on a single by Griffin. After Griffin stole second, Young walked to load the bases. Graham took a pitch off the dome, walking in a run, and Mya January walked in another, stretching the lead back out to four. Lilly Hood cleared some bases with a zipper up the middle, scoring Young and Graham to make it 9-3. Smith hit another sacrifice fly, leaving one runner on as she recorded the second out. Emma Robertson came in to pinch hit near the bottom of the order, and with one on and two outs, she watched one ball go by before connecting on a deep homer to left field, sending the dugout into a frenzy as Robertson scored her first home run as a Bear.

Austin Peay went three up, three down in the top of the fifth, and with Central Arkansas up nine, that was the ball game. Emma Veach came in to play left field and snagged a fly ball just before it passed over the wall in foul territory, making a highlight catch to seal the deal.

Lucy Crowder picked up her second win, going 3.1 innings and scattering five hits. The freshman also struck out a pair in the victory. Julia Petty came in during the fourth, and tossed 1.2 perfect innings in the save.

The Bears are back on the road for a midweek, playing at Mississippi State on Tuesday before returning home for an ASUN series against Eastern Kentucky.
