Sugar Bears Set for Florida Swing

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's basketball team takes its eight-game winning streak on the road for a two-game week in Florida. First up, the Sugar Bears will play a rematch against Jacksonville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT, then on Saturday, face North Florida again at 1 p.m. CT.

The Sugar Bears (15-6, 9-1 ASUN) continued their winning ways last time out, downing Queens in the Farris Center 68-50. Elizabeth Abiara had her third double-double in six games, dropping a team-high 14 points and 12 boards. She was one of four Sugar Bears to score in double-figures, including a very efficient 5-for-6 showing for Cheyanne Kemp, who tallied 13 points off the bench.

Abiara and Kemp, both sophomores, have really taken a leap over the last several games. Abiara has been the team's third-leading scorer in conference games, averaging 9.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. She ranks fourth in the ASUN in boards per game, and her 4.3 offensive rebounds per game are second in the conference. Kemp has turned a corner scoring the ball, averaging 7.3 points per game over her last six, shooting 60 percent from the field and 44 percent from three.

Both previous meetings with JU and UNF resulted in wins for Central Arkansas. The Sugar Bears defeated the Dolphins 74-63 in Conway, behind 19 points from Jade Upshaw, 15 from Leah Mafua, and six blocks from Bree Stephens. Then against the Ospreys, Mafua dropped career-highs of 24 points and 12 boards as Central Arkansas took a 67-53 win.

Jacksonville (11-11, 5-5 ASUN) has won four of its last five, including last time out against Bellarmine. Edyn Battle, who returned after missing six games, scored 23 points to lead the way. It was her 11th game of 20-plus points this season, and her second game this season in which she made ten field goals.

Battle now requalifies for league leaderboards, and leads the ASUN averaging 20.9 points per game this season. She's upped that average in conference play, netting 23.0 points per game in six ASUN games. She is joined by the leading rebounder in the ASUN, Saniyah Craig, who averages 10.1 boards per contest.

North Florida (4-19, 0-10 ASUN) continues to struggle to find its first conference win, dropping its most recent game to Eastern Kentucky. The Ospreys' 44 points were their fewest against an ASUN school this season, and was the fifth time the team has failed to score 50 in a game. The Ospreys shot just 28 percent from the floor, while allowing 78 points on 49 percent shooting.

The Ospreys have two scorers averaging 10 points per game, with Kaila Rougier averaging 10.4 points and Jazmine Spencer netting 10.3 points per game. North Florida has several three-point shooters, including two shooters that have made more than 40 apiece this year. Jamisyn Stinson leads the team with 47 makes, and Jazmine Spencer is right behind her at 42.

Tip-offs this week are on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT, then on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available for both. As always, fans can also keep up at 91.3 The Bear, with Steve Owens on the call.
