Bears Draw Even against Governors

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against Austin Peay Sunday afternoon, taking the lead in each half, but ultimately earning just a single point in the ASUN table.

The Bears (4-7-1, 1-3-1 ASUN) got goals from Kayla Hurley and Sophia Backstrom, but couldn't contain the visiting Governors when the ball got into chaotic situations in the box.

Hurley's goal was right from the get-go, just 106 seconds into the match. After getting possession after the kickoff, Megan Moudy found Hurley sprinting up the side, and a quick move to cut inside freed the sophomore up for the goal. It marked the fastest goal by the Bears this season. Rylee Reisdorph nearly added to the lead in the 11th minute, punching a shot that nearly beat the outstretched keeper, but Govs were able to keep it out of the net.

Brianna Lopez almost scored early in the match, but her shot bashed off the woodwork and stayed out. A few minutes later, Austin Peay scored its first goal of the match, capitalizing on a possession that lingered in the Bears' defensive third for a little too long. And despite a couple of shots late in the half, the score stayed level at halftime.

The second half started similar to the first, with Central Arkansas controlling possession, and midway through the half, the pressure paid off. Ashlyn May found Trace Pavatt making a run, and she, in turn, dished it off to Backstrom, who finished past the keeper to give Central Arkansas a 2-1 lead.

But despite leading again, the Bears couldn't quite put the nail in the coffin, and Austin Peay continued to fight to equalize for a second time. And while the Bears did a good job of bending without breaking, the pressure eventually became too much, as a ball lingered in the box before a Governor finished to tie the game. Central Arkansas had a couple of looks late, one from Makenna Adam and the other from Lea Duus Madsen, but both shots were saved by the Governor keeper.

The Bears now run the reverse of the first half of the ASUN schedule, playing at Austin Peay for the next one. Kickoff against the Govs is set for 6 p.m. in Clarksville, Tenn.
