CONWAY, Ark. – With just a few games left in the regular season, the Central Arkansas men's soccer team gears up for a rematch with the Bellarmine Knights on Saturday. Kickoff in Louisville is set for 6 p.m. CT.
The Bears (3-7-2, 2-0-1 ASUN) took a break from the pressure of ASUN matches last time out, facing No. 25 SMU in a non-conference battle. Though the final score didn't favor the Bears, it allowed for a little bit of a breath before the final push through conference play.
The more important result from the last week was the 5-2 win over Lipscomb at home last Saturday. Four Bears scored in the win over the Bisons, including a pair of goals from
Maxim Sheenkov. After surrendering the first goal, the Bears rattled off five unanswered, including four in a 15-minute stretch in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Saturday's output felt like the culmination of months of work under first year head coach
Kyle Segebart, whose team had been searching for an offensive rhythm over the first half of the season. Now, until the SMU match, the Bears had scored in six-straight matches, with multiple goals in the most recent three.
Bellarmine (7-3-2, 2-1 ASUN) hosts the Bears after its last non-conference game, a 1-0 win over IU Indy on Tuesday. A 12
th-minute goal by Alex Halevy proved to be the difference, in a match that was particularly even throughout.
The Knights' one loss in ASUN play is to the Bears, a 2-1 result that saw Bellarmine struggle to produce offensively after securing its lone goal in the eighth minute, and only record seven shots on the night.
As the season winds down, the Knights have relied heavily on the scoring of Johan Nissen-Lie, who leads the team and the ASUN with seven goals. But after scoring five goals in a four-match span right before conference play, the sophomore has scored just once since then, a goal in a 2-1 win over Queens. Last time against the Bears, the Central Arkansas defense held him to just one shot, the only ASUN defense to hold the Norwegian under four shots.
Kickoff against Bellarmine is set for 6 p.m. CT on Saturday. The match will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
