CONWAY, Ark. – After three-straight on the road, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team returns to the Farris Center for a one-game reprieve on Saturday, facing Queens at home. Tip-off against the Royals is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Sugar Bears (14-6, 8-1 ASUN) picked up another narrow win on Thursday, getting a clutch stop to defeat West Georgia for their seventh-straight win. The win over the Wolves also marked the third-straight, one-possession win on the road for Central Arkansas, who won the last three games by a combined six points, requiring stops under three seconds in all three games.
Bree Stephens had a masterclass on the defensive end against West Georgia, pulling down nine defensive boards to go along with four steals and five blocks.
Stephens added to an already impressive defensive resume at Central Arkansas, becoming the second player in the program's Division I history to reach 100 blocks, needing just 51 games to do so. She needs just four more to claim the top spot in the team's Division I history, due to eclipse Raquel Logan's 105 blocked shots. This season, she ranks fifth in the country in blocks and blocks per game, with 56 total rejections at a 2.8 blocks per game clip. In conference games, Stephens has more blocks through nine games than any other team, with 36 blocks in nine conference games, compared to 32 by both Stetson and EKU.
Central Arkansas last played Queens on January 10
th in Charlotte, winning 66-57 on the road. That game saw both teams combine for 57 free throw attempts, 47 total fouls, and just 39 made field goals.
Kinley Fisher set a career-high that day with 12 free throws, leading all scorers with 18 points as the Sugar Bears held on for the win.
Queens (7-13, 1-8 ASUN) has continued to struggle in ASUN games, defeating North Florida in overtime for its lone ASUN win a little more than a week ago. Most recently, the Royals dropped a 25-point decision at North Alabama, falling 87-62 on the road. Kemia Ward and Jordyn Weaver shot a combined 14-of-18 from the field for 31 points in the loss, but the supporting cast shot just 11-of-47.
Weaver continues to lead the team in scoring, and is the only Royal averaging double-figures this season. Her 13.7 points per game rank ninth in the ASUN, but drops off to 12.9 in ASUN games. The junior forward has been great on the glass since the start of conference games, averaging 9.0 rebounds per game, including three games of double-digit rebounds.
