Sugar Bears Set to Face Royals in Rescheduled Battle

CONWAY, Ark. – After delaying the road trip to Queens for a day, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team is set to face off with the Royals on Sunday. Tip-off in Charlotte is set for 1 p.m. CT.

The Sugar Bears (8-6, 2-1 ASUN) picked up a major home win in their last game, defeating Lipscomb 86-75 to stay perfect at home and get a little bit of momentum in the ASUN. Jade Upshaw dropped a career-high 31 points, the most by a Sugar Bear since 2021. The senior guard shot 7-for-11 from three-point range, part of a 16-for-30 effort by the team. It marked the most three-pointers made against a Division I opponent in program history, and continued to show why the Sugar Bears are so tough to beat at home.

Upshaw now averages 20.7 points per game in three ASUN games, which ranks second among all ASUN players. She also leads the conference in made threes through three games, with 12 triples so far on 40 percent shooting. Leah Mafua has also been one of the best marksmen through the first few games of ASUN play, hitting nine threes on 64 percent from beyond the arc.

Central Arkansas and Queens have only played twice since the Royals made the jump from Division II, and the Sugar Bears have claimed both games. Last season, it was a convincing 76-57 win in Conway, with three Sugar Bears in double-figures. Central Arkansas also benefited from 32 bench points, compared to just 15 from the Royals.

Queens hosts Central Arkansas for the first time, and does so with a 6-8 overall record and a 0-3 showing in ASUN. Last time out, it was a narrow 71-67 loss to Bellarmine, despite 19 points from Ana Barreto. The Royals had chances to defeat the Knights, but 19 turnovers and 28 fouls cost Queens the game.

Barreto is one of two Royals to average double-digit scoring this season, the other being the team's leading scorer Jordyn Weaver. Weaver had scored in double-figures every game of the season until the Bellarmine game, and averages 13.7 points per contest this year. The 5-11 junior also leads the Royals in rebounding, pulling down 7.5 per game. As a team, Queens has more players that shoot more free throws than three-pointers. Of the 11 players averaging at least ten minutes per game, only three have taken more shots from beyond the arc than at the charity stripe.

Tip-off against the Royals is set for 1 p.m. CT in Charlotte. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
