Sugar Bears Take Down North Florida, 3-1, in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears secured a commanding 3-1 victory over North Florida on Saturday, extending their conference winning streak to 2-0. The Sugar Bears were led by an impressive performance from Caylan Koons, whose 59 assists are the second most in a four-set match in program history.

The Sugar Bears set the tone early, taking the first two sets with scores of 25-19 and 25-17. They showed resilience in the third set, bouncing back from a deficit to win 27-25. North Florida managed to take the fourth set, 21-25, but the Sugar Bears closed out the match strong in the fifth set with a decisive 25-21 victory.

Koons' historic 59 assists were a key factor in the win, distributing the ball effectively across the court. Laci Bohannan was on fire offensively, posting 20 kills and hitting .425, while Mackenzie Vernon added 20 kills of her own, with an efficient .417 hitting percentage. Greyson Button also made significant contributions, tallying 11 kills and adding 13.5 points.

Defensively, Alexa Carranza led the Sugar Bears with 22 digs, while Koons and Regan Harp contributed 15 and 17 digs, respectively. The team's solid back row play was evident in their .970 reception percentage, which limited North Florida's serving game.

North Florida struggled to find their rhythm against the Sugar Bears' balanced attack. Despite a strong showing from Amy Burkhardt, who led the Ospreys with 13 kills and 23 digs, North Florida was unable to match the offensive firepower of Central Arkansas, hitting just .199 for the match.

Central Arkansas capitalized on North Florida's errors, as the Ospreys committed 21 attack errors compared to the Sugar Bears' 21. The Sugar Bears also outblocked North Florida 12-7, with Allison Holloway leading the way with three blocks.

The Sugar Bears now hold a 5-8 overall record and remain undefeated in conference play, while North Florida falls to 3-11 and 0-1 in the conference. Central Arkansas will look to keep the momentum going as they are back home October 4th against Bellarmine at 6PM.
