Softball Finishes Sweep of Owls with 5-1 Victory

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Central Arkansas softball team completed the sweep over Kennesaw State with a solid 5-1 win over the Owls on Sunday. It marked the third ASUN sweep of the season for the Bears, and the second-straight.

The Bears improved to 23-24 on the season, and lifted the team to 14-7 in ASUN games. Julia Petty tossed another gem, allowing one run on four hits, and earned her 13th win of the season. The top half of the batting order was key in the victory, especially the senior duo of Tremere Harris and Morgan Nelson, who combined for five hits and four RBI.

Renee Christian started the game about as explosively as possible, smacking the first pitch of the game to get on base, then moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Harris punched her first hit of the day out to left field, and that's all Christian needed to bolt home for the first run of the game.

Most of the damage came in the third inning, with the lineup starting back at the top of the order. Kylie Griffin connected on a two-bagger, and scored on Harris' next hit. A sacrifice bunt moved Harris to third, and Nelson drove her in with a massive home run to center field. It marked her ninth of the season and 34th of her career, putting her just two shy of tying the Central Arkansas all-time record.

Kennesaw State scored its lone run of the game in the home half of the fourth inning, pairing a hit by pitch with a big double off the wall to plate the run. But the Bears would answer right back in the fifth inning, as Harris got on base with yet another single. Lilly Hood followed that up with a double of her own, a shot that looked like it could climb over the fence, but settled just below for a two-base knock. Harris scampered home on the play, and the Bears cruised to the series sweep.

Petty picked up win number 12 after striking out six batters, and had her sixth ASUN start allowing one or fewer runs. Christian improved her hitting streak to a team-best 15 games, and Nelson hit 50 RBI on the year, becoming one of four players in program history to reach the mark.

Central Arkansas has one midweek left before its final ASUN series, playing host to Arkansas on Tuesday at Farris Field. First pitch against the Razorbacks is set for 7 p.m., with tickets available for purchase online.
