JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears swept a doubleheader from the North Florida Ospreys on Sunday at Harmon Stadium to win their ASUN Conference series 2-1.
UCA won the opener 9-6, handing the Ospreys their first conference loss of the season. UCA then came back with a solid 2-0 victory in the nightcap to improve to 3-3 in ASUN play.Â
The Bears used two three-run innings and a stellar relief performance from
Charlie Christensen to beat the Ospreys in the opener. Christensen relieved starter
Payton Windham in the third and went the rest of the way, striking out six and allowing three runs.
UCA had six different players with an RBI, including two each from first baseman
Jake Trabbie and center fielder
Drew Sturgeon. Trabbie, catcher
Casey Shipley and first baseman
A.J. Mendolia had two hits apiece.
The Bears put up three run in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie, then added three more in the eighth.
Bryce Cermenelli had a squeeze bunt and Sturgeon had a two-run single up the middle in the seventh. In the eighth, UCA had consecutive bunt singles by
Zeb Allen and Shipley, followed by RBIs from Mendolia, Cermenelli and Trabbie.
In the nightcap, a solid start by sophomore
Coleman MacRae was followed by an equally impressive relief appearance by senior
Mason Griffin. The duo combined to hold UNF to just three hits and no runs in a game that took just 2:36.Â
Coleman (1-2) went five innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Griffin took over in the sixth with two on and retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced, allowing just a lone base hit in the ninth before ending the game with his second strikeout.
Sturgeon and Shipley had two hits each, while Shipley and
Tanner Leonard knocked in runs. Shiple had an RBI single in the eighth and Leonard had a squeeze bunt to score a run in the fourth.
UCA (11-13, 3-3) returns home for an ASUN series against Jacksonville, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Bear Stadium.
