CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears allowed too many three-pointers and two many easy inside baskets Saturday afternoon in an 85-68 loss to the Lipscomb Bisons at the Farris Center.
The Bisons (17-11, 8-5) knocked down 11 three-pointers and capitalized on 11 UCA turnovers, scoring 18 points off the miscues, to avenge a 10-point loss to the Bears in the first meeting last month in Nashville. UCA shot well from the three-point line as well, going 10 of 24 from the arc.
UCA had held its last four opponents under 42 percent field goal shooting but Lipscomb shot 54 percent overall and 45.8 percent from three-point range. The Bisons scored 42 points in the paint and held the Bears to just 24.
"I think we over-responded to how well they shoot from outside," said UCA head coach
Anthony Boone. "So while they did hit a number of threes, they got a lot of points in the paint. We over-extended our defense and that gave them wider driving lanes and they were able to get shots around the basket. And that's why their percentage was so good and we weren't able to stop them."
UCA graduate student
Daniel Sofield made 5 of 8 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 20 points. The only other Bear in double figures was junior
Elias Cato with 12 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. The Bisons had four players in double figures, led by A.J. McGinnis with 19 points (five three-pointers).Â
UCA (9-20, 5-8) had connected on a school-record 19 three-pointers in the first meeting, with Sofield going 4 for 4. The Bears were nearly even with the Bisons in most statistical categories except points off turnovers, where the Bisons had an 18-6 advantage.
The Bears hit the road next week for ASUN games at Bellarmine on Thursday and at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. They finish the regular season at home on Friday, March 1 vs. North Alabama. Â
