NORMAN, Okla. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears will tackle their final Power 4 opponent on Sunday when they take on the Oklahoma Sooners at noon at the Lloyd Noble Center.
The Sooners are undefeated at 11-0 and ranked No. 14/15 in the national polls. Oklahoma knocked off No. 24 Michigan 87-86 on Wednesday night in the Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. Jeremiah Fears made a three-pointer and was fouled and added the free throw for his 30th point with 11.5 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
The Sooners, under the direction of former Little Rock head coach Porter Moser, shot 48 percent from three-point range while holding the Wolverines to just 14.3 percent (4 of 28). Fears, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Joliet, Ill., was 8 of 12 from the field, 3 of 4 from three-point range and 11 of 13 at the foul line to lead three players in double figures.
The Bears (3-8) are coming off a tough 73-71 win over The Citadel on Monday night in just their fourth home game of the season. Freshman
Layne Taylor topped the Bears with 21 points and 5 steals, while senior
Elias Cato had 19 points and was 8 of 8 at the free-throw line. Cato leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in free-throw shooting at 87 percent. Taylor is No. 1 in three-pointers made (3.36 per game), No. 2 in steals (2.18 per game) and No. 4 in scoring (17.0 per game).
The Sooners have won all four matchups in the series, all played in Norman. OU won 88-72 last season, with Javian McCollum leading the way with 23 points. UCA had four in double figures, led by guard
Johannes Kirsipuu with 16 points, while Glory Etim had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Cato missed the game due to injury.
The first matchup in the series was the closest, with the Sooners winning 76-73 on Dec. 20, 2010.
Following Sunday's game, the Bears will get a short holiday break before hosting their next three games at the Farris Center. UCA takes on Southwestern Christian on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 4 p.m., followed by the opening of ASUN play on Thursday, Jan. 2 vs. Eastern Kentucky and Bellarmine on Saturday, Jan. 4.Â
