CONWAY, Ark. – Back on the road for the next two, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team heads to New Orleans to play in the Tulane Holiday Tournament, competing in two games over the weekend. First up, the Sugar Bears will play ULM on Friday at noon, followed by a Saturday at either noon or 2:30, depending on the Friday result.
The Sugar Bears (6-2) are back in the state of Louisiana after playing Northwestern State last weekend. The 62-52 win saw
Jade Upshaw score 20 points for the third time this season, as Central Arkansas pulled away from the Demons in the fourth quarter. Leading by four to start the frame, the Sugar Bears outscored NSU by six in the final quarter to claim a double-digit road win.
Upshaw now averages 17.1 points per game this season, second in the ASUN. She also paces the ASUN shooting 45 percent from three, and has 19 three-pointers this season. She's one of four Sugar Bears shooting at least 38 percent from three, and one of two to hit more than ten threes this season.
ULM (3-6) is on a six-game slide, most recently dropping one to Mississippi State, and last won on November 13
th. The Warhawks forced 20 turnovers, but allowed the Bulldogs to shoot 53 percent, losing by just eight points. Jakayla Johnson scored 18 points, one of three Warhawks in double-figures.
Johnson leads the team in scoring with 14.4 points per game and steals, with 16 swipes. She's arguably the most important piece of the Warhawk puzzle, ranking in the top four in every major category this season. She's joined in double-figure scoring by Meloney Thames, who scores 12.1 points per game.
ULM struggles from the three-point line, shooting just 22.7 percent from deep. The Warhawks make up for that at the free throw line, averaging nearly 20 attempts per game and hitting them at 75 percent. Six players have hit double-digit freebies this season, and all but two players shoot better than 70 percent.
Depending on how the tournament goes, Central Arkansas will face either Tulane or Alabama A&M on Saturday. Game time is also dependent on the results of Friday's game.
Tip-off on Friday is set for 12 p.m. in New Orleans. The game will have live stats available, and fan can follow along on the radio at 91.3 The Bear.
