CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team gets set to take on Queens in the first round of the ASUN Championship on Saturday. Kickoff against the Royals is set for 5 p.m. CT, in DeLand, Florida.
The Bears (6-7-2, 3-3-1 ASUN) wrapped up the regular season on a good note, dominating North Florida with a 6-2 win.
Pietro Fontana, a First Team All-ASUN forward this season, scored his second hat trick of his career in the win, notching three goals in the triumph.
Devonte Richards,
Andres Robles and
Tajio James also tallied goals, putting up the most goals in a game this season to clinch a spot in the ASUN Championship.
Earlier today, the Bears were awarded five All-ASUN performers, with Fontana, Richards and
Elijah Bishop earning First Team All-ASUN nods.
Tajio James was named to the league's second team, and Charles Brunet was added to the all-freshman team.
Last season, the Bears also opened ASUN Championship play against Queens, claiming a 1-0 win over the Royals.
Sohma Ichikawa posted the assist on the game-winner, and the Bears dominated possession all night long, outshooting Queens 22-9.
This season's matchup with Queens went a little differently, as the Royals capitalized on an early score to defeat the Bears for the first time in program history. Even still, Central Arkansas outshot the Royals 19-11 over the first match.
Queens ended the regular season 5-9-3, with a 2-2-2 ASUN record. The Royals had to win their final match to get in, and did so with a 1-0 win at FGCU in the regular season finale. Michel Feldman scored in the 34
th minute, and the Queens defense held on through the finish.
The Royals earned three all-conference nods, with Caio Brandao and Matheus Rhormens earning First Team honors, and Samuel Indinge making the second team. Rhormens was also added to the league's all-freshman team.
Kickoff against the Royals is set for 5 p.m. CT, taking place in DeLand, Florida. The match will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
