CONWAY, Ark. – Back at home after two games away from the Farris Center, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team takes on a second in-town team, playing Central Baptist College on Monday. Tip-off against the Warriors is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Sugar Bears (3-1) look to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season at Oklahoma State. Despite the loss, the second and fourth quarters were proof that the Sugar Bears could hang with such a program, getting outscored by just five total points between the two frames.
Jade Upshaw tied a career-high, putting up 22 points for the second-straight game.
Upshaw now ranks third in the ASUN averaging 18.3 points per game, also currently placing third with 3.0 made three-pointers a game. The senior is shooting 52 percent from the floor and 44 from deep, adding a team-high six steals through four games. But the Sugar Bears are getting contributions from all over the place;
Kinley Fisher is adding 13.0 points per game,
Randrea Wright leads the team with 16 assists,
Leah Mafua and
Bree Stephens have a combined nine steals and 12 blocks, every member of the team is providing during their playing time. As a team, Central Arkansas is shooting 47.7 percent, and 37.7 percent from three.
Central Arkansas will move forward, keeping itself and CBC in town as the holidays approach. Last year's meeting saw nine Sugar Bears score at least five points in a 69-32 win. CBC was held to just 18 percent shooting, forced into 30 turnovers, and made only ten field goals.
The Mustangs enter Monday's game, which is an exhibition for CBC, 3-2 overall. So far, Raigen Head has impressed early in the season, averaging 19.4 points and 11.4 rebounds per game as a 5-8 guard. Against Champion Christian, Head dominated with 32 points and 20 rebounds, setting a program record for boards in a single game.
CBC has also benefitted from the play of Aliya Grotjohn, who averages 13.0 points per game on a terrific 52 percent from three-point range on 4.6 attempts per contest. She is one of three Mustangs shooting at least 40 percent from deep, helping her team connect on 9.2 deep shots per game at a 34.8 percent clip.
