Sugar Bears Set to Face UT Martin

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's basketball team hits the road for its first away game of the season, playing at UT Martin on Saturday. Tip-off against the Skyhawks is set for 7 p.m. in Martin, Tennessee.

The Sugar Bears (2-0) stayed perfect in the young season last time out, defeating a talented Samford team last Friday. After a sluggish start, the defense locked in for the second half and held the Bulldogs to just 12 points over the final 20 minutes of play. Leah Mafua led the way with 17 points, while Kinley Fisher and Jade Upshaw each added 11.

Defense has carried the Sugar Bears to the two wins this season, with opponents shooting just 26 percent from the field and 27 from three. Central Arkansas is also forcing 19 turnovers a game, turning those into 20 points per contest.

Last season, the Sugar Bears took the matchup between the teams in Conway, claiming an 11-point victory over UT Martin. Central Arkansas had balanced scoring in the 56-45 win, with nine players scoring, and seven scoring at least six points.

Meanwhile, UT Martin has started 0-3, dropping games to North Alabama, Tennessee and Louisville. The season-opening loss to the Lions started with an eight-point lead after the first quarter for the Skyhawks, but then a big 10-point swing for the Lions in the second quarter. UT Martin let the Lions shoot 44 percent from three, while giving up 24 fast break points.

The Skyhawks have been led so far by Kenley McCarn, who has 49 points through three games. The sophomore guard also leads the team with seven three-pointers. She is joined in double-digit scoring by Anaya Brown, whose 11.3 points per game ranks second on the team, and her 5.3 boards per game top the roster.

Tip-off against the Skyhawks is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
