CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team has one more non-conference game on the schedule, traveling to Dallas, Texas to face #15 SMU. Kickoff against the Mustangs is set for 7 p.m.
The Bears look to rebound after a 2-1 loss to Jacksonville that dropped the team to 5-5-1 overall and 2-2 in conference. Despite a goal from
Devonte Richards in the first half, the Dolphins were able to break the tie early in the second half.
Richards scored his second goal of the season against Jacksonville, reclaiming the team-lead in points with nine. The senior also leads the team in assists, with five helpers this season, and shots on goal, with 13.
Javier Ramirez, despite the loss, continues to play well, one of four keepers in the ASUN to hold a goals against average below 1.20. He ranks first in the conference in saves, with 50 shots stopped this season, and still holds the lead with four shutouts.
SMU enters the week with a 6-1-5 record, and holds a top-15 ranking in the national polls. And while the Mustangs have historically leaned on a high-powered offense, this season has been more about the defensive side of the ball. SMU has allowed just 14 goals so far this season, letting in 1.17 per match.
The Mustangs boast results over No. 6 Saint Louis (W, 1-0), No. 9 Denver (T, 2-2), No. 13 Virginia Tech (W, 2-0), and have drawn 2-2 with No. 18 Duke and No. 5 Stanford in their most recent games, reaching an unbeaten streak of seven games.
Bailey Sparks leads the team in scoring, putting in five goals with six assists this season. Four of his goals have come on PKs, and he has at least one point in nine matches this season. He is one of seven multi-goal scorers on the Mustangs, who account for 19 of the 20 scores this season.
