Sugar Bears Set to Face Arkansas on Monday

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's basketball team is back in action on Monday, having postponed Saturday's home game. Facing off against Arkansas to start the week, the Sugar Bears and Razorbacks tip-off in Fayetteville at 7 p.m.

The Sugar Bears (2-1) haven't played since a home win over UT Martin last Tuesday, a game that saw Central Arkansas win 56-45. It was another incredibly balanced scoring output for Central Arkansas, who had seven players score six or more points, led by Jade Upshaw's 10. Upshaw has scored in double-figures in all three games this season, and leads the team averaging 11.3 points per game.

Even more impressive to start the season has been the three-point shooting. In both games one and three, the Sugar Bears have connected on more threes in a game than the team has hit since 2019. And those triples have come from a number of sources, seven players have hit at least one three-pointer, and five have hit multiple shots from beyond the arc.

But once again, the defense was a major factor in the win, as UT Martin was held to just 29 percent from the floor and 14 percent from three. Bree Stephens was a force to be reckoned with, blocking four shots and coming away with two steals. The Sugar Bears allow the fourth-lowest field goal percentage in the entire country, holding their opponents to 26.8 percent shooting. Central Arkansas also has a top-20 scoring defense, allowing 45 points per game, and top-30 defensive rebounding and rebounding margin numbers.

The Razorbacks (4-0) enter the week after claiming two double-digit wins last week, toppling Little Rock 77-36 before defeating Arkansas State 82-67. The win over the Red Wolves was the first road game for Arkansas, and the second time the Razorbacks held an opponent under 70 points. Taliah Scott led the way with 34 points, shooting 12-for-21 with nine free throws. Scott is in the top-10 in a number of offensive categories, including ranking third in the nation in total points and fifth in points per game.

Saylor Poffenbarger continues to be a force on the glass, ranking third in the nation with 55 total rebounds and fourth in the country averaging 13.8 boards per game. She headlines a team that ranks 11th in defensive rebounds, and 31st in total rebounds per game. But where Arkansas has allowed teams to hang around is defensively, three of four opponents have scored 67-plus, including Louisiana-Monroe and Murray State both eclipsing 75 points.

Tip-off against the Razorbacks is set for 7 p.m. at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+, with live stats available online. Fans can also follow the action on The Bear 91.3 with Steve Owens on the call.
