CONWAY, Ark. – Back at home for game three, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team hosts UT Martin on Tuesday. The Sugar Bears and Skyhawks face off at 6:30 p.m. in the Farris Center, battling for the first time in over a decade.
Central Arkansas slipped to 1-1 on the season last time out, nearly completing a 13-point comeback against Samford on Saturday. Four Sugar Bears scored in double-figures, led by
Leah Mafua's 15, but the Bulldogs were sent to the line for 40 free throws, putting Central Arkansas at a disadvantage at the stripe. The Sugar Bears tied the game late on a pair of freebies, but couldn't quite get over the hump against the Bulldogs.
Through two games,
Jade Upshaw and
Randrea Wright are leading the team in scoring, both averaging 12 points per game. Both players are the only two to score in double-digits in both games so far this season. The duo has been a big factor in the sugar Bears averaging 73.5 points over the first two games, along with
Leah Mafua, who averages 11 points per game to go along with team-highs in rebounding (6.0 rpg) and assists (5).
UT Martin has started the season 0-2, but has played at Marquette and at home against Vanderbilt. Against the Commodores, Love Mays led the team with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, connecting on all six shots inside the arc. Shae Littleford and Anaya Brown both scored 14 points, with Littleford knocking down four triples. But up three with just under four minutes, the Skyhawks couldn't hang on, giving up the lead with 35 seconds remaining.
Also just two games behind them, the Skyhawks are led by Brown's 14 points per game, with Kenley McCarn also averaging double-figures. Brown also leads the team on the glass, pulling down 12 rebounds this season. Littleford already has nine assists, with Lexi Rubel dishing out eight and Mays tallying seven.
Central Arkansas and UT Martin have not seen one another since the 2012-13 season, playing in back-to-back years in 2011 as well. The teams split those two meetings, with UCA Hall of Famer Megan Herbert averaging 23.5 points and 10.5 boards across the two games.
Tipoff against the Skyhawks is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Farris Center. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
