CONWAY, Ark. – Moving over time zones to Eastern Standard Time, the Sugar Bears continue ASUN play with a road game against Kennesaw State on Saturday. Tipping off at 1 p.m. CT in the KSU Convocation Center, Central Arkansas faces the Owls for the first and only time this season.
The Sugar Bears (6-13, 1-7 ASUN) continue to lay it all on the line each and every game, most recently having their hearts ripped out on a last-second shot by Jacksonville State on Thursday. While the defense held the Gamecocks to their lowest point total of the year, the offense couldn't create enough buckets late in the game.
Kierra Prim secured her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 boards, leading the Sugar Bears in both categories.
Kyjai Miles and
Kinley Fisher also scored in double-digits, each notching ten in the loss. Defensively, however, there were plenty of forced turnovers to go around, with Fisher setting a new career-high with five swipes, while Miles matched hers with three of her own.
Fisher has now scored double-figures in five of her last seven games, and has played at least 32 minutes in every conference game. She's handled the increased load well, hitting at least one three in all but two ASUN games while playing multiple positions on both sides of the ball. The Greenwood, Ark., native has averaged just over 10 points per game in conference play, while leading the team with 14 steals in eight games.
Also contributing in a major way is sophomore guard
Randrea Wright. Netting 11.5 points per game since the start of conference, she has led the Sugar Bears at the point guard position, notching 20 assists through the eight games. She also leads the team at the free throw line, where she's hit 15 from the charity stripe at an 88 percent clip.
Kennesaw State hosts the Sugar Bears with a 9-10 record and a 5-3 slate in conference after falling to North Alabama on Thursday. The 69-66 final saw the Owls leading by 12 at the halfway mark, before surrendering the lead in the fourth, being outscored by eight in the final frame of regulation to send the game to overtime. But North Alabama would hit a jumper with ten seconds left to take a three-point lead, which the Owls couldn't match at the buzzer.
Amani Johnson led the team with 17 points, playing 43 minutes in the overtime affair. She was joined in double-figures by Jah'Che Whitfield, who had 11, and Stacie Jones, who chipped in ten points. Whitfield has led the team in scoring during the regular season with 13.8 points per game, and is the only Owl to average double-digits for the entire season.
Since the beginning of the conference season, Jones and Carly Hook also average double-figures, as the rotation has solidified for the Owls. Kennesaw State has had the same starting five in all eight conference games, with eight total players starting at some point during the season.
