CONWAY, Ark. – Back at home after a two-game road swing, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team returns to the Farris Center for two-straight this week. First things first, ASUN newcomer Austin Peay makes its first visit to Conway on Thursday, with a 7 p.m. tip-off against the Sugar Bears.
Central Arkansas (6-10, 1-4 ASUN) returns home after dropping back-to-back games on the road last week, and is now set to play an Austin Peay team that is tied for second in the league standings. So far this season, the Sugar Bears have played each and every top-five program from the preseason coaches' poll, an absolute gauntlet to start year two in the ASUN for the Sugar Bears.
Battling through some games shorthanded,
Kinley Fisher has stepped up her game over the last couple of weeks, leading the team in minutes played while scoring 8.4 points per game in conference matchups. She tied a season-best last week against Stetson, scoring 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting inside the three-point line.
Also holding down the fort for the Sugar Bears is sophomore guard
Randrea Wright, who has scored in double-figures in three of the five conference games this year. Wright leads the team in assists (46) and free throws made (43), with conference rankings of 11
th in assists and 10
th in free throws.
Central Arkansas hopes to pick up a couple of home wins this weekend, where the Sugar Bears are 5-2 on the year. At the Farris Center, the team outscores opponents by nearly six points per game, taking advantage of offensive rebounds and converting at a 42 percent clip from the floor. In front of friendly fans,
Kierra Prim shoots a blistering 58 percent from the floor and 96 percent from the free throw line, connecting on 23-of-24 from the charity stripe in front of Sugar Bear Nation.
Austin Peay (9-6, 4-1 ASUN) enters the week on a three-game winning streak, having most recently defeated Kennesaw State on Saturday. Avenging an earlier road loss to the Owls, the 65-59 win was punctuated with four players in double-digits in an overall balanced effort by the Governors. Austin Peay shot 8-of-9 in the fourth quarter to lock the game up, keeping the lead just large enough to edge out the Owls by the final buzzer.
The Governors have five players averaging at least 7.5 points per game, led by Yamia Johnson's 11.3 points per contest. The fifth-year guard has nine games of double-digit scoring this year, and also ranks second on the team in rebounding, pulling down 5.3 boards per game.
Tip-off against the Governors is set for 7 p.m. at the Farris Center, with tickets available at our
