CONWAY, Ark. - Back on campus for their first ASUN home game, the Bears return to the Bill Stephens Complex for a conference bout against Austin Peay Thursday evening. Kickoff against the Governors is set for 7 p.m.
Returning home after a two-game road swing, Central Arkansas is looking to get back in the saddle after an 0-1-1 trip through Kentucky. After drawing against Bellarmine, the Bears dropped a 2-3 match at Eastern Kentucky. The road trip east dropped Central Arkansas' record to 2-5-2, with an 0-1-1 ASUN record. Abby Gibson scored the first goal of the match for the Bears against EKU, equalizing in the 27th minute. Later in the second half, Taylor Webb scored an absolute highlight goal, drilling one from just inside midfield.
The Bears have found scoring from a number of sources this year, as seven players have found the back of the net, led by Gibson's pair of scores. Likewise, 10 players have tallied points, with three additional Bears dealing assists to goal-scorers.Â
In the net, all three goalkeepers have played well, earning playing time and forcing head coach Jeremy Bishop to play the rotation of keepers. Kajsa Pruner leads the goalie corps with 31 saves and a .831 save percentage. Freshman Lenja Kenstel has also done a terrific job holding opposing offenses in check, allowing just 1.00 goals per match, on average. Playing half of six matches, Keyla Perez has been a part of two shutouts, allowing just 1.33 goals per match, on average.
Austin Peay visits Conway with a 2-4-3 record, having lost its first ASUN match of the year. The Governors are one of the newest members of the conference, joining prior to this season and getting their first taste of conference action this fall after coming over from the Ohio Valley Conference. The conference loss took place this past Saturday, as the Governors fell 2-1 to Lipscomb at home. After giving up a pair of goals early, Austin Peay struck back eight seconds into the second half, but couldn't find an equalizer.Â
The Governors have scored six times on the season, with Anna McPhie and Alec Baumgardt each scoring twice. The two wins in the 2022 campaign have come against UT Martin and Alabama A&M.Â
Kickoff against the Governors is set for 7 p.m. at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, with live stats available here. Thursday's match is part of Student Athletic Advisory Committee's food drive, and fans are encouraged to bring boxed cereal to the match. All donations will benefit the Bear Essentials Food Pantry.
