CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears got a one-out triple by junior center fielder
Kolby Johnson in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the North Alabama Lions 3-2 in ASUN action on Saturday night at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (21-23, 15-8) earned the series victory after Friday night's offensive outburst which saw the teams combine for 27 runs on 33 hits. On Saturday, runs were at a premium with both starting pitchers not allowing much through the first six innings. UCA starter
Jesse Barker went 5.2 innings, allowing just 6 hits and 2 earned runs. UNA starter Will Haberstock lasted 6.1 innings and basically shut down the Bears, allowing just 2 hits and 1 run.
The Bears eventually tied the game in the eighth against the Lions' closer Austin Emener when sophomore
A.J. Mendolia reached on an error and advanced to second. With
Trey Harris pinch running for Mendolia, sophomore center fielder
Drew Sturgeon tripled into the left-field corner to tie it at 2-2.
After a leadoff double for the Lions in the top of the ninth, Gregson struck out the next two batters, intentionally walked UNA's leading hitter Luke Harper, then got Jonathan Lane swinging for his ninth strikeout in 14 batters faced.
UCA freshman
Tanner Leonard led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit through the right side but was erased on a fielder's choice by R.J. Pearson. Johnson then followed by hitting a 2-0 pitch that sliced in between two UNA outfielders for the game winner. It was Johnson's second triple of the series after he opened Friday's game with a leadoff triple.
The Bears won with just five hits _ two from Johnson _ but also took advantage of four UNA errors. UCA's other run in the fifth came on a bases-loaded walk by pinch hitter
Dylan Cyr that tied it at 1-1.
The Bears and Lions will conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bear Stadium.
