BEARS WIN 11-9 IN ASUN SLUGFEST

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears turned 14 hits, including two home runs, into an 11-9 victory over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in ASUN action on Saturday afternoon at Bear Stadium.

The Bears (12-17, 7-4) drew back even with the Gamecocks (13-15, 7-4) in second place in the ASUN East Division, with the deciding game set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

UCA took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, plating three runs on two hits, including catcher Noah Argenta's fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field. Senior right hander Tyler Navarro picked up the victory in relief, throwing 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out three and walking none.

Junior right hander Andrew Shoultz came on for the final three innings, earning his third save, striking out four and allowing one earned run.

The Bears led 3-0 after two innings against JSU starter Tanner Jones. Senior left fielder Connor Emmet launched his team-leading sixth home run over the right-field fence in the first. In the second, Argenta had a ground-rule double down the right field line and Tanner Leonard walked. Both advanced on a wild pitch before shortstop R.J. Pearson scored them both with a single up the middle.

The Gamecocks grabbed a 4-3 lead with four runs in the fourth, including the first of two home runs by right fielder Carson Crowe. He finished 3 for 5 with five runs batted in. But UCA answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by Pearson and an RBI double by Kolby Johnson.

The lead went back to JSU in the fifth when it put up three runs. UCA matched that with three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. All three came in on Argenta's three-run shot. The Bears added three more in the sixth on four hits, with RBIs from Hunter Hicks, A.J. Mendolia and Drew Sturgeon.

Sturgeon, a sophomore center fielder from Farmington, Ark., finished 3 for 5 and made several nice catches in center. Argenta and Pearson each had three RBI, while Emmet, Hicks, Argenta and Drew Pollum had two hits apiece.
