CONWAY, Ark. _ The Jacksonville State Gamecocks became the first team to solve University of Central Arkansas starter
Tyler Cleveland in ASUN play on Friday night, knocking off the Bears 4-3 at Bear Stadium.
The Gamecocks (13-14, 7-3) got a one-out, two-run home run in the top of the ninth and their closer A.J. Causey got the Bears in order in the bottom of the inning to move into sole possession of second place in the ASUN West Division. UCA drops to 11-17 overall and 6-4 in league play.
Cleveland, a sophomore from East End, Ark., had tossed back-to-back complete game victories the past two Fridays, and saw a streak of 22 2/3 scoreless innings end in the fourth inning when the Gamecocks tied the game at 1-1.
UCA took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when shortstop R.J. Pearson led off with a base hit up the middle and
Kolby Johnson drew a a walk. Conner Emmet's sacrifice bunt moved up both runners and Pearson came in on a sacrifice fly by
Hunter Hicks.
After JSU tied it, UCA went back in front in the fifth. Second baseman
Reid Bowman doubled down the left-field line, went to third on Pearson's bunt and scored on a line drive sacrifice fly by Johnson.
UCA stretched its lead to 3-1 in the seventh when Hicks' RBI single scored Pearson. But JSU got a bloop single to left field with one out in the top of the ninth and first baseman Alex Strachan homered to right field.
Cleveland (2-2) was sharp again, striking out nie and walking just one. JSU reliever Reid Fagerstrom got the win with three innings of relief. Sturgeon, a sophomore center fielder from Farmington, Ark., finished 2 for 3 for the Bears, while Hicks had two RBI, giving him a team0-high 20 on the season.
Game 2 of the series is set for 4 p.m. Saturday.
