CONWAY, Ark. – Central Arkansas women's basketball looks to get back in the win column on Thursday, as the Sugar Bears host Bellarmine at the Farris Center. With a win against the Knights already this season, the Sugar Bears aim to complete the season sweep against Bellarmine on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Last time out for the Sugar Bears was a loss at the hands of the ASUN West-leading Jacksonville State. After a neck-and-neck first quarter, the Gamecocks jumped out in the second and third quarters, putting distance between the teams. With younger players in the game in the fourth, the Sugar Bears dominated, winning the fourth quarter by a score of 16-7.
Lashiyah Fowler scored in double-figures for the second time in her young career against the Gamecocks, netting 10 in the loss.
Ruth Balogun set a career-high in rebounds in the game, pulling down six rebounds while providing some stellar team defense.
As the regular season winds down,
Lucy Ibeh still ranks in the top five in a number of categories in the ASUN. The Lagos, Nigeria native is fourth in the league in scoring at 13.7 points per game, while topping the conference in rebounding and double-doubles. At 10.4 rebounds per game, Ibeh ranks 27
th in Division I on the glass. Her 11 double-doubles rank 26
th in the country, showcasing the combination of being able to provide offense while also securing rebounds for the Sugar Bears that compares on a national level.
With just a few games left in the regular season, the Sugar Bears currently sit fourth in the ASUN West. With every team making the tournament, the incentives down the stretch involve mostly seeding and hosting rights. At the four-seed, Central Arkansas would host a game in the first round of the ASUN Championship.
Bellarmine, now in its second season in Division I, has largely struggled in conference play, sitting without a win as it enters the final stretch of ASUN games. In their last contest, the Knights fell to North Alabama, keeping it close in the first half before letting the gap widen in the second. In the second quarter, Bellarmine shot 50 percent from the field on 18 attempts, including hitting five of their six three-point attempts in the frame, but was unable to muster even 30 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.
Mackenzie Keelan led the Knights in scoring, dropping 19 points on razor-efficient 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Keelan also connected on four of her six shots from beyond the arc, adding a free throw in the effort.
Jaela Johnson tops the roster in scoring on the year, averaging 11.9 points per game. Johnson scored a season-best 26 points a week ago against North Florida, hitting four three-pointers and eight free throws against the Ospreys.
